Begin With Delicious

Our students made this Peach Tomato Caprese Salad recently, perhaps with a bit of skepticism - but still trusting us that it would turn out - and they loved it!

One of our favorite moments and a great way to start the year.

Meet Our Staff

With our culinary lead, Brenda, heading into even more culinary endeavors (Thank you always, Brenda!) we spent the summer searching for just the right person to help our youth succeed in school and work.

And we feel so lucky and grateful that a long-time volunteer stepped forward.

Heather Murphy has a wealth of restaurant management experience, especially in the "front of house" arena, assisting restaurants such as NOPA, Dear Inga and Good Good Culture Club. She has already done so much since she first stepped in our school garden as a neighborhood volunteer in 2010.  She has continued to help us over the years,  sharing her industry experience in the classroom and supporting our events.

Recently her underlying passion for social and justice equity fueled her to get a degree in criminal justice from

SF State.

Heather's combination of industry experience, knowledge and calm approachability arrive in our doors at the perfect time.

Debbie Guardado began her culinary career interning and later working at Mission Pie where she created curriculum and formalized training for transitional-aged youth, and formerly homeless, incarcerated, or disabled adults. She quickly fell in love with the work of preparing individuals to enter the workforce as it was her way of combatting the barriers to employment.

In 2014, Debbie saw the opportunity to bring her own culinary journey to students at Ida B Wells, many of whom faced similar barriers to social mobility. She continues to provide opportunities for young people to develop transferable work skills, access to industry partnerships, and have the confidence to dream big and work to achieve their life goals.
