Spring Success And Challenges To Meet Head On

Our 12th Long Table Dinner was a wonderous success! This is a pop-up event where we transform our school’s main hallway into an elegant dining experience and our students make and serve a multi-course meal.   With palpable ownership, students not only cheered each other on but danced in the kitchen at the end of the evening – a particularly fun measure of success!  Here are a few photos:

“This is turning out better than I expected”

Of course, none of this would have happened without the never ending efforts of our teachers Debbie and Heather, our volunteers from Liholiho Yacht Club, our purveyors, our guests, – AND most of all, our students!

Thank you to all who helped make this a great time.

And Now, A Shift In Funding

Heat of The Kitchen found out in April that DCYF (The Department of Children Youth and Their Families) will be unable to renew funding for our program beginning July 1. It was a tough and delayed decision with $416 million in programming requested and  92 million in funding available.

We have been extremely lucky to have DCYF funding since 2010, through a fiscal sponsorship with Buchanan YMCA.  Both organizations have been the perfect kind of support we’ve needed to serve our youth in new and lasting ways.

Many of our supporters have been working hard to fill this sudden financial gap.  Thankfully, our two key teachers, Debbie and Heather, will be funded to return next school year thanks to our school administration’s amazing efforts.  We still need additional funding to cover our immediate costs and establish ourselves as a fully funded non-profit.

Our current goal is to raise $45,000 over the coming months, to adequately fund supplies, student work experiences and managerial overhead.

We couldn’t do this work without you!  This is a moment all non-profits experience and we look forward to sharing our fundraising progress with you over the summer.
